There is no homework over the Christmas holidays (we are not that mean!). We hope Year 1 and their families have a lovely Christmas and New Year. We are already looking forward to hearing all the stories when we return. The class have had an unbelievable first term in Year 1 and we could no be prouder. It has been a joy to see not only how they have progressed academically but socially and emotionally as well. You should all be really proud of your fantastic children :).
Big Write - Wednesday 4th January. Year 1 will be writing a recount of their Christmas holidays on the first Wednesday back. If you have chance to talk with your child before the write and just remind them of anything they have done. This will include what they have done on Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, Over New Year, if they have visited any family, if they have been anywhere e.g. Stockeld Park, Lotherton Hall, cinema etc, any baking/crafts activities. Thank you!
Personalised Homework - Please continue to work on specific targets from your child's sheet. Due Date - Ongoing
Big Write - There will be no Big Write next week due to other activities happening in school
Phonics - In RWI, we have looked at 4 of the set 3 sounds: ea (cup of tea), oi (spoil the boy), aw (yawn at dawn), ur (nurse with a purse). Using your child's yellow RWI book, please can you check that they can remember the sound and can also read the words. If you have time you might want to practise spelling some of the words.
Now the children are beginning to know more than one way to make a sound we are looking at spelling patterns. For example, we looked at that oy (toy for a boy) is more likely to come at the end of words and oi (spoil the boy) is more likely to come in the middle. This might be something you would like to discuss with your child as well.
Maths (Fluency) - Please can you play 'Number bonds to 10 ping pong' with your child. This is where you say a number such as 6 and they have to reply with the missing bond to 10 as fast as they can, so in this case 4. We are aiming for an instant response. We have done this a lot in class and they enjoy it. I always start by them giving me a number and I have to say the missing bond before doing it the other way round.
Maths (Sumdog) - Please carry on with activities on Sumdog or from your personalised learning sheet. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL AND ONLY IF YOUR CHILD IS SHOWING AN INTEREST. I have set some challenges which can be completed on a laptop or tablet (if you download the app). We are not advocating screen time but some parents with older siblings have mentioned if it would be possible to use Sumdog so we are providing the option. Sumdog is a maths based programme and looks at developing fluency. If you have any questions/queries about anything, please do not hesitate to ask a member of the Year 1 team

Big Write - For next weeks Big Write we will be writing a letter to Santa. The write will be on Monday 5th December due to Christmas activities but we are hoping the topic will mean they will be excited to write! We will talk through a structure with the children but also do not want to restrict them too much with this activity. The rough structure we will give is:
1. Tell Santa why they have been good at home this year e.g. I have been good because I have tidied my bedroom.
2. Tell Santa why they have been good at school e.g. I have been good at school because I sit nicely on the carpet.
3. Write about what they would like for Christmas (and why if necessary) e.g. Please may I have a new bike because my old one is too small.
4. What they are leaving for Santa/Reindeer e.g. I will leave you a mince pie and a carrot for Rudolph.
Please can you discuss these 4 parts with your child. Please note children will have a word mat available during the write with the spelling of key words. BIG WRITE WILL BE ON MONDAY 5TH DECEMBER

Big Write - For next weeks Big Write we will be looking at our locality. Children will be writing about Collingham, Wetherby and Leeds. I have attached some pictures for support at home. This week we have looked at human and physical features which is also on the document. Children can refer back to our walk last week and the places we saw. Children will have the pictures with them during the write. Some examples of sentences might be 'Collingham is a village and it is where I live.' or 'A human feature of Collingham is the church and a physical feature is the river.' or 'Leeds is bigger than Collingham because it is a city.'

Big Write - Following the success of this weeks Big Write where the children had to describe pictures we have decided to do a similar activity next week (see pictures in the document section below). We found that children were confident and had an accurate sentence structure. However, for this week we are going to the remove the I can see/taste/smell/feel/hear and see if the class can think of alternate ways to start their sentences. We have also been trying to encourage using an adjective (describing word) in their sentence. For example, 'The huge castle was in the middle of the dark woods.' instead of 'The castle was in the woods.' PLEASE NOTE DUE TO NATIVITY REHEARSAL, BIG WRITE WILL BE ON TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER
Nativity - Parts for the Nativity will be handed out on Monday 14th November so please look out for this in bags. Any lines that your child has to learn will also be sent out. Please can you try and practise the lines with your child until they are confident with them. We will also be sending out the lyrics to Away in a Manger, please can you discuss the wording with your child as well as practising the lines. Thank you :). Due Date - Ongoing

Personalised Homework
On Friday, you will receive your child's personalised homework. This will show their specific next steps in learning. Please do not worry if you think there is a word/sound on the sheet which you think they know. What we are finding is that children will show they can say/spell a word a couple of times but not consistently. A real focus for the whole school this year is for information to be transferred to long term memory, we will be referring to this as 'sticky learning'. For the reading of phonic sounds/tricky words our suggestion would be to make flash cards and do this for short bursts but regularly. Good times to do this might be ... in the bath, before/after dinner, before your child reads their reading book. At school, if a child is reading 1v1 we will flash the phonic sounds and tricky words to them before they start. We normally find this gets them into the reading 'zone'. If you think your child is confident with a word/sound please continue to have it in your pack as it will be doing no harm revisiting. For maths, we would suggest to do as much verbally as you can and again do this for short periods of time but often. If your child needs a number line/square in front of them to start with then this is absolutely fine. If you would like to discuss your child's sheet with a member of the Y1 team, please do not hesitate to ask. Due Date - Ongoing
Big Write
For the Big Write on Wednesday 9th November, children will be using their senses to describe the pictures (please see attached below). Please can you discuss the pictures with your child using the sentence prompts on the sheet and see what ideas they come up with. Children will need to use their imagination for some of the senses but we are looking forward to seeing the ideas they come up with. Children will have the pictures and sentence prompts available to them during the write. Due Date - Wednesday 9th November
