There is no homework over the holidays, we think the children deserve a well earned rest. They have done so well with the assessments this week and you will receive an updated personalised sheet after half term so you can support with your child's learning at home.
Big Write: The first Big Write after half term will be on Wednesday 22nd February and children will be writing about emotions. One of the PSHE objectives is for children to understand a range of different emotions and why someone might be feeling that way. I have attached a sheet below to support with this. Please can you discuss the pictures with your child if you have the opportunity. Year 1 will have the pictures available to them during the write. Some example of sentences might be 'The boy is excited because he is going to a party' or 'I felt proud when I got a certificate in assembly'. Due in: 22.02.23
NumBots - If you have not already logged onto NumBots please could you activate your child's account (any problems with this please let a member of the Y1 team know). If your child has time please could they click on challenges, then onto the number bonds section and then scroll down to number bonds to 10. Please could they play this game (ideally for 3 minutes 4-5 times a week). We have been doing number bonds to 10 during our fluency sessions alongside the 1 more/less.
PLEASE NOTE - In order to access the challenges, your child has to complete 26 levels on story mode. Please work through this until you can access challenge mode. The first levels on story mode assess subitising. You can still access story mode even when you unlock challenge mode.
PLEASE NOTE PART 2: We will be continue to hand out certificates for people who pass each level on story mode. We will hand out the next certificates on Wednesday 22nd February. Due in: Wednesday 22nd February
Assessment Week: Next week (6th-10th October) is whole school assessment week. I have attached some information about what the children will be doing. After the assessments, your child will received a new personalised sheets with targeted learning. If you any questions about the assessments, please let a member of the Year 1 team know. Big Write - For the Big Write on Wednesday 1st February, Year 1 will be writing everything they know about Florence Nightingale. They have been studying Florence Nightingale during history lessons this half term and one area of the history curriculum is the ability to write about a significant individual. I have attached some documents below for you to discuss with your child. The class will have a word mat available to them during the write. Due in Wednesday 1st February
Phonics - This week we have introduced the ai (snail in the rain) and oa (goat in a boat) sounds. Using your child's yellow book, please can you check they can recognise the sound, read words with the sound in and if you have time spell the words. Thank you. Due in: Ongoing.
Maths - PLEASE CARRY ON WITH THIS AS WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE WITH THIS IN OUR FLUENCY SESSIONS NEXT WEEK. Using a 100 square (this can gradually be taken away), please can you ask your child some one more/less questions. This is best done for little time but often as possible. To start with you could find the number together with your child. So, if you said what is one more than 25, you would find the number 25 together on the 100 square and then your child would then say what one more is. To progress this, you would not help them find the number on the 100 square but still keep it in front of them so they could use it. The last step would be to remove the 100 square when asking the questions and see if they could answer without the square in front of them.
I have seen huge improvements since we started a few weeks ago just from doing 5 minute daily sessions and support at home. Due in: Ongoing

Individual Sheets - Please keep working on your child's personalised targets. These are going to reviewed again during the next assessment week (last week of this half term). Big Write - For the Big Write on Wednesday 25th January, children will be using their senses to describe pictures. This is part of our science curriculum and children have to be able to demonstrate that they understand what each sense is. Please could you discuss the pictures with your child (see attachment below) and see if they can think of a sentence for each of their sentences. We understand that smell and taste will be tricky but children can use their imagination. The class will have the pictures available to them during the write as well as a reminder of what the senses are. Due in Wednesday 25th January.
Phonics - This week we have introduced the o_e (phone home) and u_e (huge brute) sounds. Using your child's yellow book, please can you check they can recognise the sound, read words with the sound in and if you have time spell the words. Thank you. Due in: Ongoing.

We will have done 2 sessions prior to this focussing on the signs of winter and I have attached some documents below for you to look at with your child. If your child would like to compare winter to other seasons then this is absolutely fine. For example, 'Winter is colder than summer'. Some other examples of sentences could be:
I like winter because it sometimes snows.
I do not like winter because it is very cold.
I have to wear my hat, scarf and glove in winter.
The leaves fall off the trees in winter.
A winter word mat will be available during the write. Due in Wednesday 11th January
