Week 1

What a super start year 1 have had to the summer term! On Thursday we walked to church in the glorious sunshine for our Easter service led by Revd Carolyn. The children were very well behaved and sang beautifully during our songs.

In Science, we have started our new unit which is all about plants. The children learnt the names of the different parts of a plant and we explored what important job each part does. The children really enjoyed using their bodies (and some props!) to make a 'human plant'. The children were very good at explaining which part of the plant they were and what they were doing. We made the most of the beautiful weather and the children used chalk on the playground to draw a plant with all the correct parts. The children then added labels to their diagrams. You can see some pictures of their fantastic work below! We have also planted our very own broad bean seeds and the children are going to observe and record how they change and grow. We talked about what our seed would need to grow and which part of the plant might appear first. The children have been tasked with taking care of their group's broad bean so we hope they are more 'green-fingered' than us!

This week we had our first session with our gymnastics coach. The children enjoyed making different shapes with their bodies to represent different animals and then began putting some of these movements together into a short sequence.

Thank you to those of you that attended our meeting about the phonics screening - we hope you found it useful. If you were unable to attend, we have sent the pack home tonight in your child's reading folder. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about this.
