Autumn 2

Homework 21st December

 

There will of course be no homework over the Christmas holidays. The children deserve a well earned rest after a very long term! Their learning attitudes and behaviours have been exceptional and we hope you and your families have a lovely Christmas.

 

Please note we will hand out Numbots certificates as normal on Wednesday 10th January.

 

The first Big Write back on Wednesday 10th January will be a recount of their Christmas holidays. Please could you discuss with your child before the Wednesday anything they have done in the holidays. This could be what they did on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve. If they saw any family, went to any places etc.

Cursive, tricky words, capital letter and number formation.

This week we have focussed on making sure our sun letters are tall. Our sun letters are: b, d, h, k, l and t. Please can you ask your child to practice these letters in cursive. We have been practicing joining these letters by writing the words: bed, kit, let, hat, dad, tab. If you have time please can you practice the joins on these words. 

Our tricky words this work are: once, they, were. We are finding the word they is being spelt thay when children are doing their independent writing. We have spoke about it at school but any support at home would be appreciated.  NO COMPLETION DATE - ONGOING ACTIVITY.

 

Big Write

There will be no Big Write next week due to other activities. Please note we will be doing writing in our topic sessions. We know how important it is that children are writing weekly to keep building their stamina. COMPLETION DATE: n/a

 

Maths

Maths homework this year will be focussed on our basic skills and NumBots. By the end of year 1 children need to be able to:

  • Say 1 more/less for numbers to 100
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s forwards and backwards (and from any given number)
  • Know doubles (up to 12) and halves (up to 24)
  • Know number bonds to 5,10 and 20 

 

In Autumn 2, we will be concentrating on Number Bonds to 20 and one more/less to 100 with a particular focus on bridging 10 e.g. one more than 49 or one less than 80. 

 

We have found these skills are best covered little but often. If you could find 5 minutes 3x a week to practise the above it would be greatly appreciated. If your child needs a number line, number square or manipulatives to help with this to begin with then that is absolutely fine. This is best done verbally as the aim is for rapid recall.

  • For one more/less it is just asking questions such as one more than 38 or one less than 45 (the number square will help with this).
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s - Use the number square to spot the pattern and then try without when confident.

 

NUMBOTS - NumBots will continue this year and I will set challenges as well where appropriate. Please can you carry on completing your story record this week. Certificates will be handed out on Wednesday 20th December for anyone who has completed a level. Any questions about maths, please ask a member of the Year 1 team. COMPLETION DATE: 20.12.23.

Phonics - This week we have introduced split digraphs for the first time and the class have taken on board the information incredibly well. We also call them chatty friends so you might hear your child calling them that. We call them chatty friends because we need to put a letter in the middle of them to split them up. Please can you use your child's yellow phonics books to practice reading words with the a-e and i-e sound. If you have time please could you also practice writing words with the sound. Thank you. We are going to encourage children to use sentence starters such as: first, then, next, after, later, finally etc. Children will have the sentence starters and pictures available to them during their write. For the Big Write on Wednesday 29th November, children will be sequencing a day in Year 1. We are going to encourage children to use sentence starters such as: first, then, next, after, later, in the morning, in the afternoon, after play, before lunch etc. Children will have the sentence starters available to them during their write. Please can you see if your child can sequence a day in Year 1 (does not matter which day they choose!) and encourage them to use their sequence words. For example: First I change my shoes then I get my whiteboard and pen. After that we do maths. I like maths because I like numbers. COMPLETION DATE: 29.11.23

Year 1 have done a similar task earlier in the year so hopefully should be familiar with the structure. In class, we will be discussing adjectives and different sentence starters.
