Science

Summer 1: In science this half term we will look at seasonal changes. This will include:

  • Observing changes during Spring
  • Observe and describe the weather in Spring
  • Observer and describe how the day length varies in Spring

We will also be looking at plants. This will include:

  • identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees
  • identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
  • They should become familiar with plant structures (including leaves, flowers (blossom), petals, fruit, roots, bulb, seed, trunk, branches, stem).

In science this year we will be working scientifically. Year 1 will:

  • ask simple questions and recognise that they can be answered in different ways

  • observe closely, using simple equipment

  • perform simple tests

  • identify and classify

  • use their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions

  • gather and record data to help in answering questions.

We would like all children to:

  • Be curious about the world around us.

  • Have the ability to think independently and raise questions through working scientifically and the knowledge and skills that it brings.

  • Have confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills, taking the initiative in, for example, planning and carrying out scientific investigations using equipment effectively.

  • Have excellent scientific knowledge and understanding which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations, solving real and challenging problems and reporting scientific findings.

  • Have high levels of originality, imagination or innovation in the application of skills.

  • Have the ability to undertake practical work in a variety of contexts, including fieldwork.

  • Have a passion for science and its application in past, present and future technologies.
