Homework 12th February

Writing Task

For the writing task on Tuesday 24th February children will be writing everything they have learned about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. Children will have a word mat available to them during the write. Please can you talk about these significant individuals with your child to see what ideas they have.

Some key questions from our history topic are:

1. Who was Florence and why did she put herself in danger and go to the Crimea?

2. What did Florence do to improve the lives of soldiers and how do we know?

3. What did people at the time really think of Florence and how can we find out?

4. What was Florence Nightingale's greatest achievement?

5. Was Mary Seacole significant?

6. What were the most important events in Mary's life?

7. How are they remembered and have they been remembered equally?

The 5 key areas we will be looking at are:

  • Capital letters
  • Finger spaces
  • Full stops
  • Writing on the line
  • Letter size

We have also been looking at as extra:

  • Adjectives
  • Sentence starters
  • Conjunctions (and, because)

Phonics

Repeated practice of spelling helps children move their new learning into long-term memory. In Year 1 especially, it’s important to find time to practise and embed spelling outside of phonics lessons. Please keep sessions short and fun!

WE HAVE NOW MOVED TO PHASE 5 FOR PHONICS.

Graphemes:

NEW PHASE 5 graphemes (check your child is confident with them).

o (match to oa phase 3)

i (match to igh phase 3 and ie phase 5)

a (match to ai phase 3 and ay phase 5)

e (match to ee phase 3 and ea phase 5)

Ask your child to:

  • Say the grapheme
  • Can they tell you the rhyme for the grapheme (see phase 3 section in the phonics section of the website for the rhymes)

Decodable words: (this week our focus has been introducing four phase 5 digraphs)

no, so, go, open, most, post

child, tiger, spider, find, wild, kind

paper, later, chasing, basic, baking, acorn

me, we, she, be, fever, secret, being

Ask your child to:

  • Read the words.

  • Add the sound buttons (dots and dashes).

  • Write the words.

  • Remember to sound out and segment each word before spelling it.

Tricky words:

Ask your child to:

  • Read the words.

  • Circle the tricky part.

  • Write the words.

  • Remember to sound out and segment each word before spelling, thinking carefully about the tricky bit.

Additional dictation:

I found a spider in my post!

The wild tiger was chasing an acorn.

She likes to read in secret.

  • Challenge your child to apply their phonic knowledge in short dictated sentences.

  • Model and check the correct spelling of the sentence together.

Handwriting

Please continue to practise handwriting at home. We will be practising this daily in school, with a focus on keeping letters on the line and ensuring consistent letter size. The handwriting rhymes can be found in the phonics section of the school website. When forming capital letters and numbers, we are placing particular emphasis on starting at the top.

This week we have focussed on:

or (both same size letters and start from the top)

ur (both same size letters and start from the top)

er (both same size letters)

Maths Task

Basic Skills:

👉 Doubles and Halves (focus for this half term)

  • This can be practised verbally with your child.

  • Short, regular practice works best (e.g. 5 minutes, 3–4 times per week).

  • Please concentrate on doubles to 12 and halves to 24. We are looking for rapid recall for this.

  • If your child is confident with this please move onto near doubles e.g. if 6 + 6 = 12 I know 6 + 7 = 13 or if 7 + 7 = 14 I know 7 + 8 = 15. We encourage children to double the smaller number and add one for near doubles.

Arithmetic focus:

👉 Addition and Subtraction Facts Within 10

  • For number bonds to and within 10, we are aiming for automatic recall (no fingers!)

  • We are aiming for children to not be using their fingers when trying to work out the answer

  • Children also need to do the relating subtraction facts e.g. 3 + 4 = 7 so 7 - 3 = 4

  • You can do this verbally by asking:

    • “4 and what makes 8?”

    • “7 subtract what makes 4?”

  • We will also be practising these in lessons, so the children should be familiar.

  • If you are confident your child knows their number bonds to and within 10 with automatic recall including subtraction facts then please move onto number bonds to 20

  • If your child is now confident with number bonds to 20 (including subtraction facts) please move onto adding 10 to numbers within 100.

Numbots - 🏆 Certificates will be handed out every Friday.

CHALLENGE SECTION: Please can you complete as much of the challenge section as possible as this fills each child's heatmap. Any part of the challenge section will help support with filling in the heatmap. Thank you!

Any questions about homework please ask a member of the Year 1 team.

Homework 5th February

Writing Task

For the writing task on Wednesday 11th February children will be writing about the winter which is what we have been learning about in science. Some key areas we have covered are:

The winter months are December, January and February.

The amount of daylight is at its least.

Decidious trees lose their leaves but evergreen leaves keep them.

Typical weather in winter might be stormy, snowy, rainy, frosty.

People wear coats, hats, scarfs, gloves to keep warm.

People might put on the heating or their fire or a blanket to keep warm in their houses.

Some animals hibernate, birds migrate and some animals grow thicker fur to help survive the cold weather.

Some events in winter are Christmas and New Year.

Homework 29th January

*The week commencing 2nd February will be assessment week. We will keep this as normal as possible for the children and make sure they are not working for any longer than usual. This will be the first time children will see more formal papers but again this will be handled in an appropriate way - we actually find the majority of children quite like it anyway! The writing assessment and maths paper 1 will be on Monday. Maths paper 2 will be on Tuesday and then the 2 Reading papers will be split across Thursday and Friday. Any questions please just ask.*
