Week 1

What a super start to year 1 we have had!

The children have enjoyed exploring the areas of provision during their choosing time. We have loved seeing their creativity shine during these times but also how they have continued to develop and apply their new learning too!

This week, we started our new history topic where our enquiry question is: How have toys changed in the 100 years? We began our topic by investigating what modern toys are like. The children enjoyed exploring a variety of toys and blew us away with how well they used their new vocabulary to describe them.

"This toy has batteries."

"This toy is plastic."

"This dog is made from fluffy fabric."

"This robot is electronic."

"This car has lights and sounds."

"This robot has a remote control to move it."

"I can make the doll move with my hands."

As part of this learning, the children need to think about the kinds of toys that their parents, grandparents and great grandparents might have played with when they were young and how they could find out about this.

We wondered if there would be any parents or grandparents who would be willing to come and speak to the class about the types of toys that they played with when they were young (if you still have any of these toys hiding in your lofts to show them this would be even better!).

This was something that we did last year and the children absolutely loved it and it was such a valuable activity.

Please get in touch with Mrs Hesketh via the school office if you are able to help with this.

In maths, we have been sorting objects according to their similarities. The children worked in pairs to explore how many different ways they could sort the shapes.

"I have sorted them by colours."

"I have sorted them by the shapes."

"I have done them by size. These are big and these are small."
