Spring 1

Homework 8th February

Please remember we do not expect anything handed in for any of the homework activities.

There will be no homework over half term except preparation for the Big Write on the first week back. We think children deserve a well earned rest.

Personalised Sheet - You will receive your child's new personalised sheet after half term based on this weeks assessments.

Numbots - After half term, Numbots certificates will be handed out during the Friday assembly rather than in the classroom. Anyone who has moved levels by the Wednesday will receive their certificate in assembly.

Big Write

For the Big Write on Wednesday 21st February, children will be retelling the story of 'The Selfish Crocodile' which is one of our core books. If you have the book at home please can you read with your child and then sequence the key events after. If you do not have the book I have attached a link below. Children will have a word mat and sequencing pictures available to them during the write. We encourage the children to pick out key language from the story but we do not expect them to know it word for word instead we like them to put their own spin on it. This might be by using a sentence starter or an adjective.

Homework 8th February Documents

Homework 1st February

Please remember we do not expect anything handed in for any of the homework activities.

Assessment Week - Assessment week will be Monday 5th- - Friday 9th February. I have attached some information in the documents section below.

Personalised Sheet - The sheet provides you with specific targets for your child to work on at home. We have started to introduce the set 3 sounds and have also started the spellings of the set 3 tricky words. Please work on this sheet at home. Even if you think your child has grasped a word/sound etc please continue to revisit as it will help for it to be transferred to their long term memory. We will be reviewing the sheets during assessment week which is the last week of this half term. NO COMPLETION DATE - ONGOING ACTIVITY.

Cursive, tricky words, capital letter and number formation.

This week we have been practising the joins of our 'sun' letters again. These are 'b, d, h, k, l, t'. We have been writing words to help practise our joins. Please can you concentrate on the joins in the following words: bed, let, hill, till, kit, debt. Our tricky words this work are: once, they, were.  NO COMPLETION DATE - ONGOING ACTIVITY.

Phonics

This week we have introduced more set 3 sounds. We have looked at oa, ew and ire. Using your yellow books please can you recap these sounds with your child. If you have any extra time you may want to practice spelling some of the words as well.

Big Write

There will be no Big Write next week due to assessment week. The writing assessment will be retelling Jack and the Beanstalk. Please see the document section below for more information.

Maths

Maths homework this year will be focussed on our basic skills and NumBots. By the end of year 1 children need to be able to:

  • Say 1 more/less for numbers to 100
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s forwards and backwards (and from any given number)
  • Know doubles (up to 12) and halves (up to 24)
  • Know number bonds to 5,10 and 20

In Spring 1, we will continue to concentrate on Number Bonds to 20 and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s (forwards and backwards).

We have found these skills are best covered little but often. If you could find 5 minutes 3x a week to practise the above it would be greatly appreciated. If your child needs a number line, number square or manipulatives to help with this to begin with then that is absolutely fine. This is best done verbally as the aim is for rapid recall.

  • For number bonds to 20 we have been looking at the number bond to 10 and then adding a 10 to one of the numbers. For example if 8 + 2 = 10 then we know 18 + 2 = 20.
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s - Use the number square to spot the pattern and then try without when confident.

NUMBOTS - NumBots will continue this year and I will set challenges as well where appropriate. Please can you carry on completing your story record this week. Certificates will be handed out on Wednesday 7th February for anyone who has completed a level. Any questions about maths, please ask a member of the Year 1 team. COMPLETION DATE: 07.02.24.
