This week, in DT, the children began to design their animal puppet. They thought carefully about our design criteria and what materials and tools they might need. We were so impressed by their detailed designs!
Next, we thought about the skills that we might need to develop to help us make our final puppets. The children learnt how to use a template to cut a piece of felt into the correct shape and size needed. We talked about how we would need to be resilient when cutting out the felt shape as it was a bit tricky but we were so proud of how well the children persevered.
Our key question in history this week was: What types of toys did your grandparents and great grandparents play with and how can we find out?
The children remembered that 100 years is called a century and we discussed that this is within living memory.
Felix - “We could talk to them because some people might still be alive.“
Lucy - “We could look at their old toys if they still have them.”
We also thought about how we could use old photographs and magazines.
The children enjoyed investigating old photos, toy magazines and artefacts to investigate the types of toys that their grandparents might have played with in the past.
Molly - “ They had dolls like we do now.”
Elodie - “ They had teddies too.”
Ted - “ There is a train but it is metal.”
Robin - “ They didn’t have any Nintendo’s.”
Miles - “ I can see some Lego bricks.”
Shivani - “ The Lego is just blue, red, yellow and white.”
The children also enjoyed some visits from Grandparents who brought in some of their old toys!
